Auguste Comte (1798-1857)
- recognized as the "father of sociology" because he was the first to use the term 'sociology' to descrbe the study of society.
- was very smart and intrested in school, but struggled with his rebellious nature.
- wanted to find solutions to the chaos of the French Revolution.
- wrote Cours de Philosophie Positive.
- influenced by the scientific methods of the natural sciences.
- believed that there were laws that governed the operation of society.
- there are two basic issues; order and change
- __social statics-__ the overall structure of a society remains stable overtime.
- __social dynamics-__ a society changes systematically to allow for social development.
- __cerebral hygine-__ not reading works conflicting with ones own to remain pure.
- __positivism-__ the use of scientific observation in the study of social behavior.(DS)
Karl Marx (1818-1883)
- scholar, political economist and revolutionary.
- called the father of communism and author of the Communist Manifesto (1848).
- the overall structure of society is heavily influenced by the economy.
- one of the main features of human nature is the ability to adapt.
- society is divided; the haves and have nots.
- an imbalance of power leads to conflict between owners and laborers.
- troubled by the social conditons of a capitalist society.
- he did not believe in being a passive observer and felt he needed to do something.
- conflict is the primary cause of social change.
- believed that history predicted the eventual triumph of the working class.
