Article 5 Kampala Journal: Rating Beauty With a Tape Measure, Inch by Inch - Compare notions of beauty in cultures around the world and explore the connection between what is deemed 'beautiful' and cultural history

-Kampala, Uganda (Official name:Republic of Uganda)

Government:

-Republic with one legislative house called the national assembly, the president is the head of state and government.

Population:23,452,000 in 2000

Qoute:

-"The ideal woman...should weigh between 65 and 75 kilograms-(143 to 165 pounds)"

-This qoute is funny because this is the ideal woman for African men, but the face of Africa was looking for women no shorter than 5'11", and hips no larger than 36".

Anecdote:

-Although the ugandan people were hurt by the face of Africa contest not picking any of their women, they are content and happy with the short and broad traits they have.

Summary:

-Face of Africa Contest went to Uganda to to get contestants

-Ideal girl would be 5'7" or taller with hips 36" or smaller

-Sylvia Owori founded first modeling agency in in Uganda, Ziper Models

-Julie Epenu, a Ziper Model, tried out but only met the minimum requirments

-Owori revived the Miss Uganda contest, only requirments were 5'6" and thin enough to win the Miss World contest

-Winner of Uganda contest might not be the most beautiful woman in the eyes of the Ugandan people, but will to the eyes of the world

Story Line-__

-takes place in Kampala, Uganda

-south africa beauty contest

-100 uganda women tried out for "face of africa" contest

-successful contestants have to be 5 feet, 7 inches and hips no loarger than 36 inches.

-africans feel offended that none of thier girls (Ziper Models) won and their bodies were looked at as "not good"

-normal males in africa like women who are medium brown, big hips "figure eight" and between 145-165 lbs.

-average ugandans want models they can relate to

-Ugandan models were offended the contest went to Uganda and didn't pick any of the 100 girls, even girls whose hips were small enough.

-judges said the requirements were only minimum and wanted even taller and thinner models.

-MsOwori owns the Ziper Models Co, has no limit on hip size, she believes it would be too controversial

-Owori says the price of winning is showing the world that women are beautiful by any standard.

-Judges are looking for someone too skinny and malnourished

-You must be 5'7" with hips no bigger than 36 inches

-But according to African man the ideal women is 143-165lbs

-People want to see models a little bigger and not so tall...average.

-If you are too skinny people assume you have aids

-None of Ms.Owori's models made it into the Face of Africa pagent

-Women must now be 5'6" woth no hip requirement but also thin enough to win the world contest.
